PURPOSE: An apparatus for playing a recording medium capable of automatically setting a play mode and a method for controlling the same are provided to automatically set up the recording medium in the previous play mode, thereby playing the recording medium without a time required for setting up the play mode. CONSTITUTION: A DVD disk is inserted into a DVD play unit(S310). A host control unit grasps a volume name of the DVD disk(S320). It is searched whether a file having the same volume name as the DVD disk exists in an HDD(Hard Disk Drive)(S330). If so, a setup menu is displayed so that a user decides play mode selection values matching with the file(S350). The user decides to maintain the previous play mode selection values(S360). If the user decides to change the previous play mode selection values, the user changes play mode selection values(S362). The play mode selection values matching with the file are set up as a play mode of the DVD disk(S370). If the file does not exist, a file having the same volume name as the DVD disk is generated in the HDD(S380). The play mode selection values selected by the user are recorded, matching with the generated file(S390).
