PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lash adjuster having an improved abrasion resistance. SOLUTION: The lash adjuster 10 employed in a valve train of an internal combustion engine is freely slidably fit in a bottomed cylindrical body 11, and provided with plunger means 12, 14 for holding a clearance 21 of the valve train to zero in cooperation with the body 11. The lash adjuster 10 is characterized by the particulate part 14a of the plunger means 14 which is provided with a hardened layer formed of a carburized layer, and a Cr layer formed on the outside of the carburized layer in which nitrogen is dissolved in the state of supersaturated solid solution.
