PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping force regulating type hydraulic shock absorber in which a plurality of solenoids are arranged in series with a stationary iron core sandwiched in a piston rod so as to enlarge a stroke travel of the piston rod. SOLUTION: In the piston rod 9 of the damping force regulating type hydraulic shock absorber 1, the first and second proportional solenoids 24 and 25 are arranged in series with a stationary iron core 28 sandwiched. The plungers 30 and 37 of the proportional solenoids are mutually connected by a connecting rod 39. When energizing coils 29 and 35 through the medium of a conductor 43, magnetic flux is generated along magnetic passages A and B. Then, the plungers 30 and 37 move against a spring force of the spring 34 so as to regulate a damping force by opening a pilot valve 23. By arranging the first and second proportion solenoids 24 and 25 in series, sufficiently big thrust can be generated without enlarging the diameter of the piston rod 9, which leads to enlargement of the stroke travel of the piston rod 9.
