PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining cotton having excellent bulkiness. SOLUTION: Cotton is housed in a vessel 1. The pressure of the interior of the vessel 1 is reduced to≤1.3 kPa in absolute pressure. A high-temperature water 5 at≥120°C is introduced into the vessel under the reduced pressure. The pressure in the vessel is raised, for example, to about 490 kPa to 1.2 MPa in the absolute pressure by the introduction of the high-temperature water. The state is kept for a prescribed time, e.g. 2-5 min. The pressure in the vessel 1 is gradually lowered, for example, to about 200-490 kPa in the absolute pressure when the state is kept because the heat of the high-temperature water 5 is taken by the vessel 1. After the reduction of the pressure, the high- temperature water 5 in the vessel 1 is discharged from a drain pipe 8 to the exterior of the vessel 1. At the time, the valve of the drain pipe 8 is opened, and the pressure in the vessel 1 is reduced to the atmospheric pressure. The resultant cotton is taken out, and the taken out cotton has excellent bulkiness because the cross section of each cotton fiber is swelled and has a nearly circular shape. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
