PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multilayer magnetic recording medium and a mass high density magnetic storage device of which the S/N at high density recording and the property of recording density are excellent. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium has a non-magnetic substrate, a plurality of magnetic layers provided on the non-magnetic substrate, and non-magnetic intermediate layers located between the magnetic layers. Further, the medium is constituted so that respective film thicknesses of the plurality of magnetic layers differ and the respective products of the residual magnetization and thickness are substantially equal or respective residual magnetizations differ. This device is a magnetic storage device combined with the magnetic recording medium and a magnetic head using a metal thin film at least in a part of a magnetic pole or a magnetic head utilizing the magnetoresistive effect for reproducing.
