Polyepoxide is hydrolysed by mixing a soln of it in a water-immiscible solvent with an aqs. proton-contg. acid catalyst. Hydrolysis occurs with complete elimination of cross-linking and other side reactions. The polymeric polyhydric alcohols obtained are particularly useful for the prepn. of thermosetting resins. They may also be epoxidised and reacted with bisphenol A to increase the mol wt. They may also be added as anti-caking agents to epoxy resins or they may be used to prepare vicinal esters without risk of the cross-linking which is inherent in the direct reaction of carboxylic acids with epoxy resins. |
