The invention relates to a number plate (1) for motor vehicles, comprising a base body (2) which, according to the present invention, is made of an electrically conductive material or an electrically conductive layer applied directly to or via another layer (5) to the base body. The electrically conductive base body (2) or the electrically conductive layer thereof forms a first electrode of a flat capacitor. A layer with an electroluminescent pigmentation is applied to the base body (2) or to the electrically conductive layer. The electroluminescent layer can be applied according to different methods, e.g. spray painting, brushing or special screen printing methods. In order to create the electric field, it is necessary to apply an electrically conductive layer (4) to the electroluminescent layer (3) in order to form the second electrode.
