PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 5-substituted-2(5H)-furanone such as a 5-alkoxy-2(5H)-furanone safely, efficiently, and industrially advantageously. SOLUTION: The process for producing the 5-alkoxy-2(5H)-furanone represented by formula (IV) (wherein the signs are as described in the specification) comprises reacting a 2(3H)-furanone represented by formula (I) with an alcohol represented by formula (II) and a halogenating agent to obtain a 4- alkoxy-3-halogeno-γ-butyrolactone represented by formula (III) and reacting the obtained 4-alkoxy-3-halogeno-γ-butyrolactone with a base.
