PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a 2-fluoro-2-methylpropionic acid in a high yield in a mild condition, wherein a fluorinating agent and a F source as a catalyst can be recovered and reused. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing the 2-fluoro-2-methylpropionic acid is characterized by reacting a compound shown in formula (1) with HF (wherein, a substituent R is hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or an aryl group which may have a substituent, X is methylsulfonyl group, trifluoromethylsulfonyl group or trifluoroacetyl group).
