The invention relates to a milling device (1) comprising a blade having a receiving area and a milling unit comprising a milling rotor (14). Said receiving area comprises an opening (4) and is embodied as a blade (2). A through opening (19) is provided at the base of the blade (2), leading into a milling space (12). The milling rotor (14) can convey material both into the receiving space or out of the same. In order to carry out both modes of operation, a first form of embodiment involves a drive rotating in a pre-determined direction D, one beating arm (16) being associated with the first mode of operation and another beating arm (24) being associated with the second mode of operation. In another form of embodiment involving only one individual beater arm (16), the milling unit (54) can be operated in two different working positions by means of a pivoting device. Said positions are differentiated by a 180° rotation about a vertical axis which is at a right angle to the rotational axis of the milling rotor (14).
