PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce lowering of brightness, and to prolong an illumination time, in an EL element used for illumination of various kinds of electronic devices, and an illumination unit using the element. SOLUTION: Light transmissive electrode layers 22A, 22B, and back plate layers 25A, 25B are formed with a plurality of substantially U-shaped layers adjacent each other with a prescribed space to constitute the EL element 20, and the illumination unit is constituted to make voltage application onto the plurality of layers in the EL element 20 switched alternately at a prescribed time interval by a control means, so as to reduce the lowering of the brightness, and to allow the long illumination time.
