PROCESS FOR PREPARATION OF PYRIMIDINYL ALCOHOL DERIVATIVES AND INTERMEDIATES FOR THE SYNTHESIS THEREOF

A process by which pyrimidinyl alcohol derivatives can be prepared from industrially available raw materials at high efficiency and in high yield. Specifically, a process for preparation of pyrimidinyl alcohol derivatives represented by the general formula (2): (2) [wherein R is alkoxymethyl], characterized by catalytically hydrogenating a compound represented by the general formula (1): (1) [wherein X is halogeno; and R is as defined above] in the presence of a catalyst and a basic substance. The invention provides a novel process for preparation of pyrimidinyl alcohol derivatives serving as important intermediates in the preparation of difluoromethane- sulfonanilide derivatives having excellent herbicidal effect. According to the invention, three moieties, i.e., halogen atom, nitro group and ketone group can be reduced in the same system in one step to thereby obtain pyrimidinyl alcohol derivative (2) at high efficiency and in high yield.
