PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method of discriminating an optical disk for exactly discriminating the disk by eliminating the dispersion of the degree of disk modulation, in the optical disk discriminating method for discriminating the existence of the optical disk and its kind by detecting the reflectivity of the optical disk. SOLUTION: The existence of the optical disk and its kind are discriminated by irradiating the mirror surface of the optical disk with a convergent beam and measuring the reflectivity of the reflected beam.
