An instrument determines the water content of a solid material. The instrument has a container (1), a heater (4) and a gas sensor (13) in the container. The container gas a sample (5) of the substance in the vicinity of a reagent (14) which reacts with water vapor to form hydrogen whose presence is measured. The gas sensor (13) measures heat conductivity. The gas sensor is one which measures the heat conductivity of a gas. The container (1) has detachable upper (2) section and fixed lower (3) sections. The upper section has a reagent (14) chamber (10) while the lower part has a chamber (6) for a solid sample (5). The sample is heated by a hot plate extending over the entire width (3). The hot plate has a temperature sensor (20) and regulator (21). An Independent claim is also included for a commensurate operating process.
