PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vortex pump and its operating method, capable of preventing a foreign matter from retaining in a circulation area and a retarded vortex area and being hardly discharged in the vortex pump. SOLUTION: In this vortex pump which comprises a radial-flow open-type impeller 1 having a main plate 10 mounted approximately orthogonal to an axial central line O, and wherein a suction port 21 is formed on a wall face 30 faced to the impeller 1 of a pump casing 2 accommodating the impeller 1, and the pump casing 2 has a wide clearance between an end part 11a at a non-main plate side of a blade 11 of the impeller 1 and the wall face 30, and further has a discharge port 22, the wall face 30 is downwardly inclined at a predetermined angleθtoward the suction port 21.
