PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous emulsion which contains as the dispersing medium a vinyl alcohol polymer containingα-olefin units and as the dispersoid a polymer consisting of monomer units of at least one kind selected from acrylate monomers, styrenic monomers, and diene monomers, and which is excellent in water resistance, mechanical stability, and in addition alkali resistance. SOLUTION: The emulsion is the one which contains as the dispersing medium the vinyl alcohol polymer containing 0.5-20 mol.% of theα-olefin units and having a polymerization degree of 2,000 or less and as the dispersoid the polymer consisting of the monomer units of at least one kind selected from the acrylate monomers, styrenic monomers, and diene monomers. When the emulsion is subjected to a test with a Maron mechanical stability measuring instrument at 20°C and under a load of 0.5 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>and 1,000 rpm for 10 min, and then filtered through a 60 mesh stainless steel wire-gauze, it gives a filtration residue of 0.3 wt.% or less to the solids of the emulsion.
