PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce running cost by reducing the amount of addition of organic matter.

SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the nitrous acid type nitrification carrier having ammonia oxidizing bacteria for nitrifying ammonia nitrogen up to nitrous acid preferentially deposited thereon, either one of bottom sludge of lakes and marshes, rivers or the sea, soil of land surface and activated sludge of a sewage disposal plant is inclusively immobilized on a monomer or prepolymer for immobilizing microorganisms and the microorganism immobilized monomer or prepolymer is subsequently heat-treated at 30-80°C.
