<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst suppressed in the thermal deterioration of cleaning capacity while using Rh as a catalytic metal. <P>SOLUTION: An aluminum coupling agent is bonded to the surface of ZrO<SB>2</SB>and heated to form a thin layer 2 comprising Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>fine particles and Rh is supported on the thin layer 2. Since the thin layer 2 is extremely thin, the contact of Rh with exhaust gas becomes possible even if Rh enters the inside of Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>to form a solid solution.
