The cash register printout uses a paper band carrying pre-printed special offer price reduction tickets (C, C). Each coupon includes a bar code (12) which may be read by a code reader and printed data which may be read by the customer. This pre-printed information lies on the reverse of the band. The procedure for operating a cash register includes use of a paper band on the reverse of which is a longitudinal series of pre-printed special offer price reduction tickets (C, C). Each coupon includes a set of coded symbols, including a bar code (12) which may be read by a code reader. Each coupon also includes two sets of intelligible information (M,T,M,T and R,V,R, V) enabling the customer to identify the coupon. The paper band is advanced through the cash register, and information relating to the sale of goods is printed on the opposite side of the paper. The paper is cut at the output of the register, in order to provide the customer with a cash ticket. The intelligible information includes two parts, one of which lies longitudinally with respect to the band, and one of which lies transversely.
