A workflow system in the form of a network including at least two workstations at which work in the form of a sequence of at least two tasks is performed is described. The system employs mobile agents both as task application and as a transport mechanism around the network. An agent is a mobile thread, which is able to move from one computer to another whilst maintaining the value of its internal objects and variables. Many agents may exist at any one time in the workflow system. An agent may be created using a rule set that may be generated and saved by an administrator. The agent uses a rule set to define the actions that it is to perform at a destination. Every action that an agent performs may be considered as an action of work and when an agent moves to a new destination this could be considered as an example of a workflow. A task application may be an application form for a university, the handling of claims by an insurance company, the registration of trademarks by a trademark registry etc.
