PURPOSE: A method for controlling operation of a reciprocating compressor is provided to accurately detect a location on which TDC(Top Dead Center) is 0 after stabilizing cycle by executing operation with low stroke after starting. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises the steps of: a first step gradually increasing stroke until a first reference time has passed after initial starting; a second step operating the compressor at current stroke until a second reference time has passed; and a third step increasing stroke to detect stroke on which TDC=0, and operating at the stroke in which the TDC=0. The first reference time and the second reference time are preset to stabilize cycle based on test and stored in a ROM(Read Only Memory). A piston is moved up and down by voltage depending on stroke order value after a reciprocating compression part is started by a user. Stroke is gradually increased thereby and maintained after the first reference time has passed, and is changed to control cooling performance after the second reference time has passed. A microcomputer detects stroke in which the TDC=0, and controls on/off of a triac by switching control signal for the stroke in which the TDC=0 so as to drive the reciprocating compression part.
