PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an atimicrobial agent for coating, which has more excellent antimicrobial activity, mildew resistance and heat resistance than those of a conventional antimicrobial agent for coating and hardly eluting from a coating film in outdoor exposure, a coating composition containing the antimicrobial agent and a coated material. SOLUTION: This antimicrobial agent for coating comprises a quaternary ammonium salt represented by general formula (1) R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>N<SP>+</SP>.X<SP>-</SP>(1) (R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are the same or different and are each a 1-22C straight-chain or branched-chain aliphatic hydrocarbon group; R<SP>3</SP>is a 1-22C straight-chain or branched-chain aliphatic hydrocarbon group or a 7-22 arylalkyl or arylalkenyl group; R<SP>4</SP>is a 8-22C straight-chain or branched-chain aliphatic hydrocarbon group; X<SP>-</SP>is an superacid anion).
