Dispersive multi-layered mirror has a highly reflective layer (2) on a substrate (1) for reflecting all frequency components. Individual dielectric layers (4, 5) are formed over the reflective layer to act as a resonant coating structure (3) for modulating the phases of the reflected short-pulses. The various frequency components have different storage times in the resonant coating structure.
