PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for an alkaline battery with excellent liquid- holding capacity and durability for electrolyte solution. SOLUTION: The separator for an alkaline battery is provided with a polymer compound-containing layer with a polymer compound equipped with a functional group which changes hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity with heat, acid or radiant rays on the surface of its vapor-liquid transmitting porous base material and so structured to be capable of directly coupling with the surface of the porous base material in chemical coupling on which given hydrophilic/hydrophobic regions are formed by changing hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity with heating, supply of acid or irradiation of radiant rays on given regions of the surface of a vapor-liquid transmitting porous base material.
