PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder for detecting an angle, in particular, having a scale with a pattern in a rotor so as to measure an angle of the rotor with high precision by reading the scale. SOLUTION: This scale formed in the rotor is constituted in such a way that patterns whose line width is spatially changed and which are arranged at an equal pitch are sequentially arranged in the direction of rotation of the rotor, a scale detection means reads the pattern of the scale and detects low precision of a rotation angle from a position of the pattern to obtain high precision of the rotation angle by Fourier transforming periodic data obtained from the pattern.
