<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide image coding apparatus and its control method wherein a mixed image containing regions such as a character region and a photograph region in which necessary resolution levels are different can be coded effectively in a state that a high quality image can be restored. <P>SOLUTION: An image inputted from an image inputting part 101 is divided into a plurality of tiles by a tile dividing part 103. In a image reduction part 104, reduction images are produced from the tiles. Regarding each tile, region information is inputted from a region information inputting part 102 and judged in a region judging part 105, and either a tile or a reduced tile is selected by a selector 106. In a discrete wavelet conversion part 107, discrete wavelet conversion of the selected tile is performed, and the selected tile is decomposed into a prescribed number of subbands. Coefficients of the subbands are quantized in a conversion coefficient quantization part 108, coded in a bit plane coding part 109 and made a bit line in a code line forming part 110. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
