PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for processing audio signals in which consumption of a recording capacity is optimized and a recording time is increased. SOLUTION: Digital signals are input processed by an input means 1. Noise level of the inputted digital signals is detected by a noise level detecting means 3. An optimum sample word length of the signals is determined by a sample word length determining means 5 based on the output signals (the noise level of the inputted digital signals) of the means 3. The sample word length of the outputted digital signals from the means 1 is changed by a sample word length changing means 7 so that the sample word length becomes the sample word length determined by the means 5. Data (digital signals) whose sample word length have been changed are outputted to a recording means 9 and recorded. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
