[Also in Division H1] Condensation of water-vapour entrained in a gas, such as the effluent gas from a battery of oxygen-hydrogen fuel cells, is effected by passing the vapour-laden gas through chamber 2 in contact with one surface of a heatconductive porous membrane 4 whose opposite surface is in contact with cooled condensate in chamber 5 whereby the membrane is maintained at a temperature below the dewpoint of the water-vapour so that it condenses on the surface of the membrane, and maintaining the pressure of the gas such that the condensate is pressed through the membrane into chamber 5, being discharged through line 6. The porous membrane 4 may be made of sintered nickel. In the condenser shown in Fig. 1, the condensate in chamber 5 is cooled by passing water through chamber 9 which is separated from chamber 5 by heat-conducting, non-porous wall 8. In the condenser shown in Fig. 3, the condensate in chamber 5 is cooled by evaporation of condensate from porous plates 17 which are connected by metallic heat conductors 18 with plate 11. The cooling effect can be increased by circulating air by means of a fan. The condensation of organic solvent vapours may also be effected using such a porous membrane system.
