[Class 39 (i)] In electric discharge tubes, particularly high pressure mercury vapour lamps having a quartz envelope, thermionic electrodes and a gas filling, the metal contact cap is spaced from the tube by a hollow intermediate member in which the conductors connecting the leading in wires to the cap contacts are housed. The discharge tube 1, Fig. 1, with the seals 3 perpendicular to the tube has a cap consisting of a hollow member 4 comprising a metal plate 8, an insulating member 9 and screw contact member 5. The seals 3 are mainly outside the cap and are secured by collars 10. The member 4 may be entirely of insulating material. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the seals are mounted in tubular members 11, flanged at their inner ends, and secured either inside or outside the member 4 by a plate 13. The members 11 are made to have a friction grip on the seals, or are provided with resilient retaining means 18 or are slotted and clamped over the seals. The member 4 comprises an insulating part 9 to which the contact member 5 is swaged at one end, and at the other end a two-piece metal cover 14, 15 carrying the tube. Irregularities in the spacing of the seals of the tube are allowed for by making the apertures in the cover plate of elongated form.
