PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for enzymatically producing an optically active mandelic acid derivative. SOLUTION: This method for producing the optically active mandelic acid derivative comprises acting culture, body cells or a processed product of microorganisms on a phenylglyoxylic acid derivative and recovering the formed optically active mandelic acid derivative, wherein the microorganisms have stereoselective reducing activity of the phenylglyoxylic acid derivative. Thus, the optically active mandelic acid derivative of the general formula (II) is produced. The optically active mandelic acid derivative is useful as an intermediate for synthesizing pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
