PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an overall dimension to a level appropriate for use in a portable information device while a required printing function is secured in a thermal printer having a driving platen. SOLUTION: A thermal head 12 is fixedly fitted to a frame body 18. The platen is supported by the frame body 18 movably to the thermal head 12. A driving mechanism 16 is provided with a gear system 46 for transmitting an output torque of a rotation driving source 44 to the platen and an oscillating member 70 which is coupled rotatably to the platen and can oscillate with intermediate gears 68 and 69, a driven gear 66 and the platen about a rotation axis of a driving gear 64. While the platen moves along an arc track, every one of the driven gear 66 fixed to a platen shaft part 42 and the pair of intermediate gears 68 and 69 on the oscillating member 70 is shifted synchronously by an equal center angle about the rotation axis of the driving gear 64 as the center.
