PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus that discriminates the continuity of physical addresses of a storage medium on the basis of a result of detection of estimation of presence of access disabled areas (defective sectors) of a secondary storage device (HDD 48) from an external control means side so as to reserve consecutive areas capable of high-speed transfer. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus designates a physical address, measures a data transfer speed to an access unit area (sector) in a storage medium being the HDD, discriminates the continuity/discontinuity of the storage areas in the unit of sectors depending on whether or not the obtained measurement result is within a normal reference transfer speed range, and reflects the result on data in a table in which access disabled areas are registered. A memory control section 43 avoids the use of the access disabled area by referencing the table in the case of reserving areas for DMA transfer (e.g. reservation by instructing either consecutive areas or split areas) so as to properly attain transmission operation conditions at a high-speed.
