PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a meter reader capable of preferentially receiving a data signal for security even in the middle of the transmission of a data signal for automatic meter reading. SOLUTION: When meter side radio equipment is requested for meter-read information, a transmitting means 12 repeatedly transmits a header part n times, and then transmits a telegraphic message A having an information part composed of packets including data, and operation of a channel scanning means 14 subsequently scans a prescribed plurality of channels over a prescribed period of time T or the prescribed number M of times. If a carrier sensing means 15 detects existence of a carrier, a channel scanning operation is stopped, and a receiving means performs receiving. If a signal is to a self-station, shifting is made to receiving processing, and if the signal is not to the self-station, shifting is made to channel scanning again, and the operation of the transmitting means repeats an operation that transmits the telegraphic message A again after the elapse of the prescribed period of time T or the prescribed number M of times.
