PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of preventing the rear side of an original with a small thickness from being read because of the transparency of the original and to provide a method of controlling the image reader, a program and a storage medium. SOLUTION: A copying machine 10 is provided with an original placing platen 101, an original retainer provided with an ADF (automatic draft feeder) 102 therein, and a CIS (contact image sensor) 103 freely movable in the length direction under the original platen 101. The CIS 103 is controlled by a control section 110, opposed to a tip 105a of an original guide 105 at a position A, and opposed to an original roller 106 at a position B. The control section 110 compares luminance data of the same part of the original 104b read at two positions A, B with the CIS 103 to calculate the optical transmittance of the original and revises a read control variable of the CIS 103 to reduce or prevent the reading of the rear side.
