Wire is made from an iron- or a nickel-based material and contains Cr, B, Si, CrC, TiC, WC, MoC and C. Preferred Features: The Cr amount is measured so that the resulting coating contains 3-40, preferably 20-30 weight % Cr. The Ti, W and Mo alloying elements are measured so that the resulting surface coating contains not more than 15 weight % TiC, WC and Mo2C. The B content is measured so that the resulting surface coating contains not more than 1-6 weight %.
