Process for the continuous determination of mercury in gaseous samples, especially waste gases, comprises rinsing the converter of the mercury analysis system in short intervals with an oxygen-containing gas. Preferred Features: The short intervals are selected in the region of 10 minutes to 10 seconds, preferably 2 minutes to 30 seconds. Rinsing is carried out for 5 minutes up to seconds, preferably 1 minute to 15 seconds. The rinsing device is connected to a sample gas feed. Rinsing gas is mixed with the sample gas in intervals, preferably counter-currently to the sample gas. The process is computer-controlled.
