The invention relates to a system for cordless communication, comprising at least one Base Station and at least one Digital Enhanced Cordless Terminal (DECT−terminal), wherein the at least one DECT terminal is arranged for transmitting/receiving compressed digital speech signals according to the DECT standard to/from the at least one Base Station, and wherein the at least one Base Station is arranged for transmitting/receiving compressed digital speech signals according to the DECT standard to/from the at least one DECT terminal, wherein the at least one DECT terminal comprises a first codec unit and the at least one Base Station comprises a second codec unit, wherein, in use, a digital DECT speech signal to be transmitted by the system is compressed by the first or the second codec unit for generating a compressed digital DECT speech signal and wherein a compressed digital DECT speech signal received by the system is decompressed by the first or the second codec unit for generating a digital DECT speech signal, wherein the at least one DECT terminal is provided with a first pre−encoder connected with the first codec unit and a first post−decoder connected with the first codec unit, wherein, in use, in a transmitting mode of the at least one DECT terminal, the first pre−encoder converts a data signal of a defined type to be transmitted by the at least one DECT terminal to a digital DECT speech signal and subsequently supplies it to the first codec unit, and wherein, in use, in a receiving mode of the at least one DECT terminal, the first post−decoder converts a digital DECT speech signal coming from the first codec unit to a data signal of the defined type.
