PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic photonic crystal which is made of an environment-friendly ecological material, which can be formed with nano-order accuracy at a low cost, which is easily controlled for the dimension (diameter or length) of the structure and for the refractive index or the like, which makes addition of functions for hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity or the like easy, and which is suitable for a polarizer, a resonant filter, an optical waveguide or the like. SOLUTION: The organic photonic crystal has a one-dimensional or multi- dimensional periodical structure with at least a part of the periodical structure comprising an organic compound. Preferable aspects of the crystal are: a photonic band gap is present; the organic compound is at least one kind selected form biodegradable materials, the biodegradable material is in the form of a rod-like organic molecule, the rod-like organic molecule is at least one kind selected fromα-helix, DNA and amylose; the side chain of the rod-like organic molecule is doped with a high refractive index nanoparticle; the refractive index of the high refractive index nanoparticle is 2; and the rod-like organic molecule is amphiphilic.
