PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a cylinder head from damage by making smaller the diameter of the housing 20 of the glow plug 1 of a diesel engine and by sufficiently securing the width of the sheet surface 12d for the cylinder head. SOLUTION: The rear end of a metal outer casing 12 having a ceramic heater 2 fixed immovable at the front end is pressed into and fixed immovable in a housing 20. The front end is a small diameter section 12a, and is followed by a tapered section 12d and then by a large diameter section 12c. Further behind them, a medium diameter section 12b is provided, and this is pressed into the housing 20. During the press-in process, a step (abutting section) 12e positioned between the sections 12c, 12b abuts at a front end face 20a of the housing 20, and this determines the position of the casing 12.
