PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bearing device and a vertical shaft pump not requiring any water supplying facility and sustaining a non-water operation for a long time. SOLUTION: The bearing device 16 is equipped with a rotary shaft 4 and a bearing 13 to bear the rotary shaft 4 rotatably, wherein that portion of the periphery of the rotary shaft 4 which contacts with the bearing 13 is subjected to a fusion spray of chromium carbide, and the bearing 13 is formed from a composite of polyimide resin and carbon fibers or a high strength carbon.
