PURPOSE: A blacklight unit is provided to use red, green and blue light emitted from light emitting diodes by the synthesization with white light emitted from fluorescent lamps, thereby improving the color reproducibility and the luminance selectively. CONSTITUTION: A blacklight unit includes a light source and a light guide panel(14). The light source includes a plurality of red, blue and green light emitting diodes(11) for emitting a predetermined amount of light, fluorescent lamps(12) for compensating the light emitted from the light emitting diodes, and a housing(13) for surrounding the fluorescent lamps and the light emitting diodes to focussing the light emitted from the fluorescent lamps and the light emitting diodes in one direction. The light guide panel transmits the light supplied from the light source to a liquid crystal display panel.
