PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier assuring lower operation cost which can reduce the variation of gain due to a temperature change in an ambient atmospheric condition, show excellent characteristics to amplify a wavelength multiplexed signal without deterioration, and moreover can be manufactured easily. SOLUTION: The optical amplifier is provided with an amplifying optical fiber 1 for amplifying the signal beam by optical excitation, an excited light source 5 to supply an excited beam to the amplifying optical fiber 1, a monitor 9 to monitor the gain of the amplifying optical fiber 1, and an excited beam source controlling section 10 to change the wavelength and power of the excited beam oscillated from the excited light source 5 depending on the change of the gain monitored by the monitor 9. Moreover, in the case that a semiconductor laser is used as the excited light source 5 and a device which can change the temperature of the excited light source 5 is used as an excited beam source controlling section 10, the wavelength of excited beam can be changed easily by heating the excited light source 5.
