PURPOSE: Provided is a cosmetic composition containing berberine which has excellent antimicrobial activity against Pityrosporum ovale as dandruff-causing bacteria and no adverse effect on the skin as well as excellent itch- and inflammation-inhibiting action. Therefore, the cosmetic composition can be effectively used in the prevention of dandruff. CONSTITUTION: A cosmetic composition contains 0.001 to 10% by weight of berberine and additionally 0.001 to 1% by weight of any one selected from the group consisting of zinc pyrithione, piroctone olamine and a mixture thereof. For an example, 30% by weight of sodium lauryl sulfate, 30% by weight of polyoxyethylene sodium lauryl sulfate and 2% by weight of each coconut oil fatty acid diethanolamide, propylene glycol and berberine are dissolved in water uniformly until the temperature reaches 60deg.C and then cooled to 40deg.C. Thereafter, the mixture is added with an ester of paraoxybenzoic acid, a fragrance and citric acid.
