PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expected value generating unit in which an accurate expected value is generated from the histogram of sampling values of reproducing signals even though an offset is generated in the reproducing signals. SOLUTION: The unit is used in a data reproducing device which conducts restoration of most probable data in accordance with maximum likelihood decoding algorithm. The unit is provided with an offset detecting means (31) which detects an amount of offset of reproducing signals, an offset canceling means (33) which eliminates the amount of offset detected by the means (31) from the sampling values of the reproducing signals and histogram generating means (34, 35 and 50) that generate histogram of the sampling values from which the offset amount is eliminated by the means (33). The expected value generating unit determines an expected value based on the histogram of sampling values obtained by the histogram means. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
