<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflective liquid crystal display element with which excellent display quality which is bright and has sufficient contrast and little in display coloring, is obtainable. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is provided with a liquid crystal cell 1 having a liquid crystal layer disposed between substrates in which liquid crystal molecules 2 are oriented in an initial oriented state wherein they are oriented to a direction along a substrate surface in a state without any applied electric field and the oriented state of the liquid crystal molecules 2 changes by applying the electric field, a polarizing plate 3 disposed on the front side of the liquid crystal cell 1, a reflection plate 5 disposed on the rear side of the liquid crystal cell 1 and a λ/4 phase plate 4 having wavelength dispersion characteristics reverse to those of the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal cell 1 and disposed between the liquid crystal cell 1 and the reflection plate 5. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
