The invention proposes that an audio sensor or microphone (1) monitors the ambient noise level and is linked to a control unit (2) to adjust the horn (3) output to a level above ambient. Further output control can be exercised through a speed sensor (5) to match the tone intensity or type to the vehicle speed or a daylight level sensor (6) or to control the level appropriate to the time of day. Where multiple horns are fitted the system can select the number to be activated depending on vehicle speed or ambient noise.
