PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanner which can detect an abnormal part of a film containing silver, and a scanning method. SOLUTION: The scanner 10 includes a lamp 36 for irradiating the negative film 12 containing the silver with light and a CCD sensor 24 for receiving the light reflected by the segment exclusive of the abnormal area 30 of the negative film 12. In the scanner 10, the fact that the light emitted for irradiating an abnormal part 30 is disturbed in the optical path by the abnormal area 30 and is not received by the CCD sensor 34, is utilized and the segment where the light is not received is detected as the abnormal area 30. The abnormal area 30 can also be detected by receiving the light emitted to perpendicularly irradiate the negative film 12 and reflected perpendicularly therefrom. The negative film subjected to rapid development processing without undergoing at least either of a bleaching process step and a fixing process step after undergoing, for example, a color developing process step is used as the negative film 12.
