PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a winch that minimizes a structural space and enables a smooth insertion of a transmission device into a drum body. SOLUTION: The winch has a cylindrical drum 2 whose surface is engraved with a rope groove 3 along which a wire rope 25 can be wound in a plurality of layers, flange plates 4 and 5 delimiting sides of the drum 2, and a means for fixing an end of the wire rope 25 in the first winding layer. The end of the wire rope 25 is inserted into a rope passage 26 defined inside one flange plate 4 out of the two flange plates 4 and 5, is led out through an opening 34 from an inner side 29 of the one flange plate 4 substantially on the radius of the first winding layer, and is provided with a transition substantially corresponding to a helical transition of the wire rope in the first winding layer at least in an outgoing region 30.
