The light intensity converter has a body with a central axis (12), a first curved surface (16) transverse to the central axis, a second curved surface (18) and an outer peripheral surface extending between the first and second curved surfaces. The body is constructed so that light with a first intensity distribution is incident on the first curved surface, diverges in a first region of the body and converges in a second region of the body by refraction if the light from the first curved surface enters the body, and light emanates from the body at the second curved surface. The emanating light has an intensity distribution different from that of the first intensity distribution. An Independent claim is also included for an optical disk drive.
