<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas detecting element and an apparatus with stable sensitivity and superior response performance which are superior in the joint stability of interfaces between electrodes and a solid electrolyte substrate and suppress the activity of a reference electrode or an oxygen detecting electrode to a gas to be detected. <P>SOLUTION: The gas detecting element comprises the oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte substrate 1, the detecting electrode 5 fixed to the solid electrolyte substrate 1 and having activity to the gas to be detected and oxygen, and the reference electrode 7 fixed to the solid electrolyte substrate 1 and having activity to at least oxygen and detects the concentration of the gas to be detected from the potential difference between the detecting electrode 5 and the reference electrode 5. The detecting electrode 5 and/or the reference electrode 7 are coated with an electrode coating layer 11 made of an oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte. The electrode coating layer 11 comprises a section to be joined to the solid electrolyte substrate 1 directly or via an electrode backing layer made of an oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
